Two letters, one from Lady Byng requesting cutting of McKee's Mapleleaf Mums, and discussing gardening in general. The second, is a letter of condolence from W.L. Mackenzie King to McKee's daughter, Mary McKee Hughes, on his death. Original, 4 pages.

McKee, James : James McKee (the father-in-law of the donor) was, according to family tradition, born in Scotland were he trained as a gardener on Lord Lovett's(?) estate. Subsequently, he ran off with his Lordship's daughter; later, he came to Canada and ca. 1913, he was appointed Dominion Gardener at the Experimental Farm in Ottawa. He may have established the green houses there and at Rideau Hall. He developed a new variety of "Mum" and named many plants. In the 1940s, he retired and moved into the house of his daughter and son-in-law (the donor) at 300 Sherwood at the corner of Bayswater in Ottawa. He contributed to the house's garden which existed ca. 1934-1967. He died in 1950. James McKee was followed as Dominion Gardener by his son William, who held the post for about ten years. The son was displaced by someone with a Phd, who was given credit for developing the "Mums", and the son was sent to Rideau Hall.

A relative of James McKee, Peter McGratie(?), was an early commercial gardener in Ottawa.
