A longtime Howdy Doody fan, Harker was a member of the Doodyville Historical Society of New Jersey and a collector of Howdy Doody memorabilia.
CBC's Howdy Doody show was a Canadian adaptation of the popular American children's television programme. When the CBC decided in 1954 to produce Howdy Doody in Canada, the producer, F.B. Rainsberry, felt that the American version was too brash and aggressive, and he determined to create a gentler, more joyful programme. CBC hired a number of scriptwriters to create this distinctly Canadian version, and Clifford Braggins was the senior writer. The Canadian programme developed as daily 30-minute segments featuring puppets and actors, including the characters Howdy Doody, Timber Tom (a character introduced into the Canadian version, in place of the American Buffalo Bob), Clarabell the Clown, Willow the Witch, Princess Haida and Flubadub, in a series of slapstick routines, songs and dramatized adventures whose aim was essentially educational. Among the actors appearing in the show over the years were Larry Mann, Barbara Hamilton, William Shatner, Peter Mews, and Robert Goulet. The show ran for five days a week for five years, from 1954 to 1959.Additional information:General note:Received in 1994 and 2004 from Byron Harker, formerly of Langley, B.C.Related material:See also the Gordon Meyers fonds (MG30-D267) and the John Gerrard fonds (MG31-D221) for additional Howdy Doody scripts.Subject heading:Source:PrivateFormer archival reference no.:MG31-D244 -
