Fonds consists of six series of textual records: Constitution, By-laws and other material; Meeting files; Membership files; Financial files; Correspondence; and Printed material, 1947-1990.

The fonds also contains the following films: Bakaruhaban - in private's uniform; Bakaruhaban - Sunday romance; Les bas-fonds; Le jour se leve = Daybreak; and Les enfants terrible = The strange ones.

Canadian Federation of Film Societies : During the 1930s, a number of film societies were founded across Canada to promote the appreciation of the art of film through screenings, discussions and lectures. There was a central society in Ottawa, the National Film Society, which became the Canadian Film Institute (CFI) in 1950. The CFI was largely a film study centre. In 1955, an off-shoot of the CFI, the Canadian Federation of Film Societies/Fédération canadienne des ciné-clubs (CFFS/FCCC), was founded with a mandate to act on behalf of its member film societies in providing information about films, evaluating new releases, encouraging the formation of new societies, negotiating with distributors to obtain films, and generally promoting an interest in films in Canada.

At first membership in the CFFS was confined to film societies and film clubs. As time progressed, its membership enlarged to include individuals, educational institutions, libraries, filmmakers, distributors, etc., with members from Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, to Salmon Arm, B.C. The CFFS held an annual general meeting which combined business with a film festival, published a Newsletter (disseminating film society news, distributor information, reviews of films, etc.), and maintained a small film library from which societies could rent films. The CFFS also published an index to films which might interest its member societies and a guide on how to establish a film society.

The CFFS was a non-profit organization that relied on the support of volunteers. As interest in maintaining a national federation dwindled in the late 1980s, the decision was made to fold the CFFS in 1990.

Custodial history:

The moving image material was part of the Canadian Film Institute's (CFI) transfer to the National Archives of Canada on May 12, 1975. The CFI received the material from the Canadian Federation of Film Societies between 1965 and 1973. The textual material was received in 1990 from Linda Wills of Vernon, B.C., past secretary of the Canadian Federation of Film Societies.
