Fonds consists of seventeen original typed letters signed by Marshall McLuhan, addressed to David Staines, sometimes with marginal notes by McLuhan, 1976-1979, and a copy of a circular letter by McLuhan, 1977, as well as four pages of an early draft of McLuhan's article "Canada: The Borderline Case", with McLuhan's own notations. (This article was published in The Canadian Imagination: Dimensions of a Literary Culture, ed. David Staines, Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University Press, 1977). The letters give glimpses at McLuhan's character and illustrate his relationship with a younger colleague. The annotated draft pages provided additional information about McLuhan's ideas and style.

Staines, David, 1946- : David Staines is a professor of English at the University of Ottawa. As an undergraduate in the honours English Language and Literature program at Saint Michael's College, University of Toronto, in the academic year 1966-1967, he studied under Professor Marshall McLuhan. In the mid-1970's, when Staines was teaching at Harvard, he invited McLuhan to come to Harvard (February 1976) to give a public lecture in conjunction with a course in Canadian literature that Staines was introducing that term. McLuhan gave the lecture and prepared a shorter version for publication.

H. Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980), was a Canadian author, professor and communications scholar, with an international reputation for his studies and writings in the field of communications. The NA has the McLuhan fonds (MG31, D156).

General note:

This material supplements the files in the McLuhan fonds concerning the article "Canada: The Borderline Case" (MG 31, D 156, vols. 139-140). Copies of two of these letters appear in the McLuhan fonds.
