Brazilian Traction operated electrical, street railway and telephone concessions in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and surrounding territory in Brazil.
The Sao Paulo Tramway, Light and Power Company had been established in 1899 after the Italian engineer, Francisco Antonio Gualco, approached the Montreal railway contractor James Ross about the street railway concession that Gualco and his Brazilian partner, Antonio de Souza, had in Sao Paulo. After receiving a detailed report on the potential for development of utilities in Brazil, the Sao Paulo company was founded with Ross, William Mackenzie, the president of the Canadian Northern Railway, the Toronto lawyer Z. A. Lash, and the American electrical Engineer, Frederick S. Pearson as the prime sponsors. Incorporated in Ontario, the firm soon prospered. It quickly expanded into hydro-electric development and telephone systems.
The promoters acquired concessions in Rio de Janeiro forming the Rio de Janeiro Tramway, Light and Power Company in 1904. With the backing of British and European capital the companies were reorganized into the Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company in 1912. Brazilian Traction was renamed Brascan in 1969. And finally in 1979 Brascan's remaining Brazilian utilities were sold to the Brazilian government.
