Fonds consists of material relating to Levine's role in the relief and rescue of refugees from starvation and disease during the famine and drought which swept Ethiopia and Sudan in the 1980's. As such, fonds contains personal correspondence, memoranda, personal notes, minutes of meetings and financial information about the relief and rescue operation which document Levine's humanitarian work. Fonds also contains similar types of material relating to the activities of the Winnipeg Committee for Jews which he served as chairman from 1978 until 1992. These files also contain information on individual rescue cases as well as press releases and additional research material.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting the activities of the Ethiopian Jewish relief and rescue operation in Canada, Ethiopia, and Israel, 1970-1990.

The fonds also consists of a video recording of an interview with Mark Dolgin, founding member of the Jewish Association for Development, [ca. 1990].

Levine, Elliott M., 1935- : Elliott Levine was born in Toronto in 1935 where he was educated. He has taught philosophy at the University of Winnipeg since 1965. A human rights activist, Professor Levine took a leading role in the relief and rescue of thousands of Ethiopian refugees from starvation and disease due to the drought and famine which swept Ethiopia and Sudan in the 1980's. From 1978 to 1992 he served as chairman of the Winnipeg Committee for Ethiopian Jews. The committee was part of an international campaign to alleviate the suffering of these people by providing direct humanitarian assistance and then arranging for their transport out of the stricken areas and resettlement.

Among their achievements, he and his committee of volunteers placed non-sectarian medical relief teams in several refugee camps in Ethiopia and the Sudan and supplied them with food and water, surgical supplies and medicines. Oxen, agricultural implements and grain seed were also provided. Most of the rescue effort was centered in Gondar province which was one of the most hard-hit areas. Other initiatives such as setting up feeding stations and medical clinics at these camps were co-ordinated with relief agencies such as the Red Cross and its affiliates and the Canadian Mennonite Committee. Their relief projects were funded by private, corporate and government contributions and public fund-raising campaigns in Western Canada.

During this period his committee of volunteers operated and funded over 100 private rescue missions in Ethiopia and Sudan. They secured exit visas for tens of thousands of Jewish and non-Jewish refugees and arranged for their airlift out of the famine-stricken areas to Canada and Israel. Because many of the refugees left relatives behind the rescue teams concentrated their efforts on family reunification in Canada and Israel.
