Fonds consists of records which document Theodore F.M. Newton's career as a teacher and professor, as a public servant with the Wartime Information Board and Canadian Information Service, and as a diplomat with the Department of External Affairs; his family genealogy is also included, 1920-1981.

The fonds also contains photographs documenting Newton's career, [ca.1925]-[ca.1969]; caricatures of Newton, unsigned, at various stages of his life, and a caricature of Newton executed at a NATO conference in Lisbon, February 1952.

Newton, Theodore Francis Moorhouse, 1903-1991 : Theodore F.M. Newton was born on July 15, 1903 in Sarnia, Ontario to Rev. Frank Gibson Newton and Mary Agnes (Robinson) and died on 20 April 1991. He received a B.A. in 1926 and an M.A. in 1927 from McGill University. He was a member of the English Department of Harvard University (1928-1937) and then became an Associate Professor of English at McGill in 1938.

In 1943, he joined the Wartime Information Board, and in the same year he married Margaret Edyth Bruce. He was appointed Director of the New York office of the Wartime Information Board in 1945. In 1946 he filled two posts: that of a Supervisor of the Canadian Information Office in U.S. and Information Officer with the Canadian Embassy in Washington. In 1948 Newton became the first Canadian consul in New England. In 1950, he was loaned to N.A.T.O. and became the Director of Information, North Atlantic Council. In 1954 he was posted to the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, became Ambassador to Indonesia (1958-60), to Colombia and Ecuador (1961-1964), returning to a position in the Historical Division of External Affairs in Ottawa in 1964.

Newton's diplomatic responsibilities included postings with the United Nations Information Office. He was the official Canadian representative to the United Nations, 1943-1945, where he served two terms as Chairman, was the consultant to the Canadian delegation at a U.N. conference in San Francisco in 1945, and was a member of the Canadian delegation to the U.N. Assembly (Oct.-Dec. 1946).
