Fonds consists of autobiographical information, Central Committee presentations, participation in international congress and conventions, CPC submissions to federal government, typescripts and notes on socio-political situation in Canada and abroad, interviews and speeches, some correspondence, printed pamphlets, invitations and greeting cards from world leaders, 1965-1991.

The fonds contains photographs of William Kashtan at various functions including: presentation of the Order of the People to Kashtan; walking in demonstration in front of the Parliament Buildings; greeting Mikhail Gorbachev; arriving in Berlin for a conference; a sculpted portrait of Kashtan in a Moscow museum; Della and William Kashtan at various events in Moscow; and with delegates from the Communist Party of China, [ca. 1980-1992].

The fonds also contains sound recordings of meetings held by William Kashtan about his role in the International Conference of Communists held in Yugoslavia and an audio track of the television program Webster, containing an interview with Kashtan, 1974-1976.

Kashtan, William, 1909- : William Kashtan was born in Montréal in 1909. In 1927, at the age of 18, Kashtan joined the Young Communist League. He left Montreal in 1929 to become the southern Ontario organizer of the Young Communist League, and, in the following year, became its general secretary. In the years of the Great Depression, he was actively involved in organizing unemployed and unorganized workers. Kashtan played a leading role in building the Canadian Youth Congress, an organization which embraced virtually all youth organizations in Canada.

He was asked to visit Spain during Franco's fascist insurrection against the government. Following this visit, he undertook the establishment of the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion, which became part of the International Brigade in the Spanish civil war. In Spain, he was also actively involved in the organization of the Canadian Medical Transfusion Unit headed by Dr. Norman Bethune.

In the years that followed W.W. II, Kashtan served as Toronto organiser of the Communist Party, industrial director and labour secretary, and central organizer. In 1965 he was elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Canada, a position he retained until his retirement in 1988. He died in 1992.
