Fonds consists of selected documents (1747-1762) from the papers of Sir Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle, relating to naval and military affairs, including the Siege of Quebec, 1759. Most of the correspondence relates to the Seven Year's War, including events in Europe as well as Canada. A few documents relate to events in Nova Scotia, including a decree of Vice Admiralty Court. Several other documents relate to two grants of land, to Edward Earl of Clarendon in 1661. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1716.

Newcastle, Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of, 1693-1768 : Sir Thomas Pelham-Holles, 5th Baronet, first Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and of Newcastle-under-Lyme (1693-1763), and British statesman, was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Pelham. He assumed the name Holles in 1711, after succeeding to the estates of his uncle, Sir John Holles, Duke of Newcastle (q.v.), as 2nd Baron Pelham of Laughton in 1712, created Earl of Clare (1714), Duke of Newcastle (1715), and became Knight of the Garter from 1718. He was Lord Chamberlain, 1717-1724; Secretary of State for the Southern Department, 1724-1746, Secretary of State for the Northern Department, 1746-1754; First Lord of the Treasury, 1754-1756 and 1757-1762; and Lord Privy Seal from 1765 to 1766.
