Petition, printed in 1857, and subsequently annotated, from the inhabitants and natives of the Red River Settlement to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada regarding the interference of the Hudson's Bay Company with the settlement. The company was accused of confiscating furs, interfering with agricultural endeavours and attempting to force inhabitants to relinquish land. The petition was signed by a total of 595 colonists, British and aboriginal, including Roderick Kennedy. The petition includes a copy of the indenture which the Hudson's Bay Company prepared for the signature of the petitioners, in lieu of land deeds. The indenture contains the printed signatures of officers of the company including Duncan Finlayson, Governor of Assiniboine.

The Parliament of the united Province of Canada (1841-1867) succeeded the Parliaments of Upper and Lower Canada. Until 1856, the Legislative Council was appointive; thereafter, both Houses were elective. The Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada was the body to which citizens of the colony could address their concerns. Surviving petitions to the Legislative Assembly will normally be located in the records of Parliament (RG 14, C).

General note:

This petition appears to have been sent to the colonial Secretary of State in 1862, discussed in the House of Lords in that same year and recorded in Vol. 1677, Hansard, p. 1409. The petition thereafter was deposited in the Library of Parliament of Canada by Malcolm MacLeod, Q.C., along with his monograph on the annexation of the North West Territories, which appeared in "The Week", 3, 17, 24, and 31 July 1896. Volume II of The Publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society, Hudson's Bay Company 1670-1870, makes reference to this petition in its description of the movement to annex the Company's territories(p. 798).
