Fonds consists of microfilmed correspondence received by Charles Mellish, principally from John McNamara Hayes, an army surgeon in North America. The letters date from 1776 to 1782, and deal with American attacks and British strategies at Crown Point, Chambly, St. Johns, and Ticonderoga. Also included is a petition for the release of Lieutenant James Hadden. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1716.

Mellish, Charles, ca. 1737-1796 : Charles Mellish (ca. 1737-1796), was the son of William Mellish, a politician and Receiver-General of Customs, 1760-1785. Charles was born at Blyth, Nottinghamshire, and became a barrister in 1766. He served as Member of Parliament for Pontefract, 1774-1780 and for Aldborough, 1780-1784. He was also recorder for Newark, 1770-1777 and 1779-1794.
