This film contains unedited, silent footage which appears to document the 1956 return of territory in the Porkkala Peninsula to Finland and the removal of Soviet troops based there since the Russo-Finnish Armistice in 1944. Footage appears to take place inside the Soviet embassy in Helsinki, Finland; along a road to [Stensvik], Finland, then to Kirkkonummi and finally to [Friggesby]. Noteworthy footage includes: the 26 January 1956 signing of the treaty to return the land, attended by Soviet and Finnish officials such as Joho K. Paasikivi, President of Finland from 1950 to 1956; Urho Kekkonen, Prime Minister of Finland until 1956, when he became President; and Andrei Gromyko, Deputy Foreign Minister until 1956. Witnesses include [General Kabanov], wearing military decorations, and members of the press. Footage in [Stensvik] includes snow scenes; crowds lining the road; reporters; soldiers passing through a roadblock; a nighttime scene of snow falling against a light; an outdoor band playing; a Finnish crowd waving goodbye to Soviet soldiers; and a farewell speech for [General Kabanov] as he boards the train. Further scenes show people and buses lined up outside the Lehdisto Press building; reporters inside a moving bus; the arrival of a convoy of buses and cars at Kirkkonummi, a village in the Porkkala area; an interview of the station master; a speech by an official; a map showing the route to [Friggesby]; Finnish ski troops on skis; reporters; a truck bearing the sign "Yleisradio", and preparations around an aircraft.

1. The subject description is based upon viewing the film as well as examining documentation provided by the donor and the archivist-of-record.~2. Some encyclopedias indicate 1955 and others indicate 1956 as the year that Porkkala was returned to Finland; donor shot lists give the date as January 26, 1956,for the signing of the treaty.~3. Filmiseppo, Helsinki, Finland is indicated as producer based on invoice found in film can.
