Fonds consists of personal papers of Wendell Lawson arranged at the National Archives into the following series: Family material, 1861-1937; Personal material, 1915-1952; Journals and notebooks, 1913-[ca.1950]; Correspondence, 1912-1952; Manuscripts, 1910-[late 1940s]; Career as artist, 1915-1950; Career as architect, 1924-1950; Career as teacher, 1937-1947; and associations, 1937-1951.

Fonds contains artistic material created or collected by Wendell Lawson during his career as an architect and professor, including student sketches and prints executed in Europe, Canadian prints and drawings, and American prints, drawings and watercolours. Also included are family portraits and related artistic material, including postcards and other ephemeral items. Fonds also contains a series of fifty-one prints by Arthur Wendell Lawson of historic views in and around Nova Scotia.

Fonds contains photographs taken, collected, or commissioned by Wendell Lawson during his life and relating to his travels in Canada and Britain, his interests in architecture, and his relations with family and friends.

Fonds also contains maps, 1935-1952: Trans-Canada air lines; Canada at war; Boston featuring the downtown section; map of Peoria, Illinois and environs; highway map of Ohio; 1950 official West Virginia highway map; Mexico, Central America and the West Indies; railways [in London, England]; bus map [of London, England]; the British Commonwealth of Nations; map of the associated British railways; the British empire and commonwealth; a modern pilgrim's map of the British Isles; United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; a dated events map of world conquests; also three books related to architecture.

Lawson, Wendell (Arthur Wendell Phillips), 1898-1952 : Wendell Lawson was born in Toronto in 1898 and studied architecture at the University of Toronto and l'École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, 1924-1925. He returned to the University of Toronto to complete his studies in 1926.

Lawson worked as an architectural draftsman with various architectural firms during the early 1920s and during the late 1930s. From 1926 to 1932, he taught architectural design in the United States, but returned to Canada to teach at Mount Allison University and Ladies College in 1936. He moved back to Toronto and taught architecture and building construction there from 1937 to 1946. He also worked as an architect in Toronto (principally private residences). In 1947 he left Canada again to teach in the School of Architecture, Ohio State University, and he died in Ohio in 1952.

Lawson studied drawing under the Canadian artist C.W. Jefferys. He was a member of the Society of Canadian Painters-Etchers and Engravers and was its secretary 1935-1936 and its president 1939-1942. He exhibited his own work with that society, as well as exhibiting with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, Canadian Society of Graphic Arts, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, Art Association of Montreal, and with other arts organizations. He became known as an illustrator and did a series of drawings of historical sites in Nova Scotia for the Ryerson Press. He also illustrated various Ryerson Press publications.
