Benson (Family) : Ernst Juhanpoika Karhunen was born on 18 August 1886 in Kuopio, Finland. From 1903-1905, Karhunen was apprenticed to Liudvig Nobel', a mechanic in St. Petersburg (Russia). Thereafter, he emigrated to Canada, changed his name to Ernest Benson, and was naturalized in 1921. Under a Finnish passport, he briefly visited the USSR in 1923. Benson's wife, Aino Elisabeth Hytonen was born on 1 November 1887 in Keuruu, Finland. She emigrated with her family to "Amerika" in 1913, and was subsequently naturalized as a Canadian citizen in 1921. At the time of Mrs. Benson's death, the Bensons resided in the area of Mattawa, Ontario.
