The fonds consists of a personal record of marriages performed by the Reverend Dr. Isaac Tovell (1845-1936) in the cities of Toronto, Peterborough, St. Catharines, and Hamilton, 1875-1935. Entries are made in roughly chronological order in an indexed notebook under the initial letter of the bridegroom's surname. Each entry includes an initial indicating the city in which the marriage took place. A calendar inside the front cover of the book gives what appears to be a list of birthdates of personal interest to the owner, while a similar list of marriages is found inside the back cover.

Tovell, Isaac, 1845-1936 : The Reverend Dr. Isaac Tovell (1845-1936) was the grandson of British immigrants who settled at Guelph, Ontario, where he himself was born, 8 November 1845. He decided to enter the ministry of the Wesleyan Methodist Church after a year of travelling the Millbank Circuit under direction. He was received on trial in 1869, in which year he served on the Berlin Circuit. In 1870 he served on the Georgetown Circuit and in 1871 and 1872 on the Cobourg Circuit while he was a student at Victoria College. In 1873 he was received into full connexion and ordained. After the union of 1874 which created the Methodist Church of Canada, he ministered at various places: in Toronto, 1873-1883; Peterborough, 1884-1887; St. Catharines, 1888-1890; and Hamilton, 1891-1896. In 1897 he returned to Toronto to minister at Trinity Methodist Church, and he appears to have remained in that city for the rest of his life. His D.D. degree was conferred, honoris causa, by the Wesleyan Theological College, Montreal, in 1895.
