The official name of the unit is The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery.

The regular component of the Regiment originated on 20 October, 1871, when two batteries of garrison artillery ("A" and "B") were authorized and located at Kingston and Quebec respectively. These batteries served also as Schools of Gunnery which, on 6 February 1880, were designated "Royal Schools of Artillery." On 10 August, 1883, a third battery, "C", was authorized (but not formed until 1887 in Victoria, BC) and the three batteries were designated the "Regiment of Canadian Artillery." On 24 May, 1893, the Regiment became "The Royal Canadian Artillery."

The early history of the regiment was filled with numerous campaigns since the creation of the volunteer force under the Militia Act of 1855. The regiment served during the Fenian Raids, in North West Canada in 1885, in the Yukon Field Force in 1898, and in the South African War, 1899-1902.
