Copies of autograph letters from Canadian Senators, Cabinet Ministers and business men sent to Ben Austin, Secretary of the Northwestern Literary and Historical Society of Sioux City, Iowa in response to his requests. Most of the letters state that they enclose photographs, but none of the photographs were received by the Archives. Two of the letters contain information of historical value. The letter of Peter Sinclair of 1892 expresses severe criticism of tariffs and approval of free trade. The letter of Thomas Nicholson Gibbs of 1866, which is addressed to G.J. Burns not Ben Austin, states that Sir S.T. Galt's reduced tariff on sugar meets with universal support. Included with the correspondence is a memorandum prepared by the donor which give brief autobiographies of the men represented in the papers.

Northwestern Literary and Historical Society : This Society attempted to collect the autographs and photographs of notable men from all nations of the world. They elected persons as honorary members and Ben Austin, the Secretary, would write to these people for their photographs and an autograph letter.
