On February 3, 1943 while escorting Ventura bombers on a raid to St. Omer a number of German Focke-Wulf FW 190 Fighters engaged the bombers while many more attacked Rainville's Squadron. His squadron was then engaged in a running fight all the way to the coast at Calais.
