Ottawa Lay School of Theology : The Ottawa Lay School of Theology was one of about 20 founded across Canada and affiliated with the National Steering Committee for Lay Schools of Theology, a committee of the United Church of Canada. Like many other local schools, the Ottawa Lay School became inter-denominational and is now sponsored by the United, Anglican and Presbyterian Churches in Ottawa. W.A. Monaghan and L.M. Read were among the founders and successive Chairmen of the National Steering Committee. W.A. Monaghan was also a founder and first Chairman of the Ottawa Lay School. L.M. Read is Chairman of its Curriculum Committee.

Classes began in October 1964 at the Ottawa Lay School of Theology, which built upon the work of the earlier "University of Religion" at Dominion-Chalmers United Church. Monaghan was the first chair of the Ottawa school which, like many of the other schools, quickly became inter-denominational. The Anglican Church joined the United Church as co-sponsor in 1967. A proposal to make the National Steering Committee ecumenical did not win support and the committee folded following Read's resignation in 1969. The Presbyterian Church became a sponsor of the Ottawa school in 1974. The school is run by a General Committee whose members also serve on publicity and curriculum committees. The position of Dean is honorary and the Executive Committee has generally not been very active. Patricia McClenahan was president of the school from 1982 to 1985. For one reason or another, the Ottawa school has been more durable than the approximately twenty other lay schools that were founded across Canada and is the only school still operating.
