Fonds consists of nine rubbings of headstones from the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation Cemetery, Mount Royal prepared by Tilya Helfield: Philip Hoofstetter Hays, infant son of M.J. and Abby Hays. M.J. Hays was the Montreal Police Chief from 1845 to 1861. The child died, aged 10 months, on April 9, 1810. The stone was found leaning against another tombstone at the edge of the cemetery. When she returned the following week, it had disappeared. (Approximate 12 1/2" x 21 1/4"). Jessy Solomons (1785-1853). The tablet covers the entire grave, flat on the ground. Jessy Solomons was a descendant of Levy Solomons, head of one of the founding Jewish Canadian families. (Size 26" x 6 1/2"). The gravestone covering the single grave of several of the children of Dr. Aaron Hart David and his wife Catharine Joseph. (Size 14 1/2" x 52"). The gravestone of Dr. Aaron Hart Davie, 1812-1882. Dr. David was the first Canadian-born Jew to practice medicine in Canada. (Size 13" x 50"). Catherine Joseph, wife of Aaron Hart David, died 1876. She was the daughter of Henry Joseph, who founded one of the largest chains of trading posts in Canada, extending from Hudson's Bay to Quebec City, and helped found Canada's Merchant Marine. (Size 14" x 25"). A fragment of the gravestone (the top half) of Samuel Becancour Hart, grandson of Aaron Hart, one of the first Jews to settle in Quebec. It was destroyed before she could complete the rubbing. (Size 24 1/2" x 36 1/2"). Henry Joseph and his wife Rachel Solomons. (Size 25" x 44 1/2"). Louise Gruenwald, daughter of H. & R. Gruenwald, died, aged 2 years, 8 months, August 28, 1870. (Size 13" x 23 1/2"). One very large rubbing that has not been deciphered. Other items in the collection consist of a large drawing (done by Mrs. Helfield) 20" x 24", of the Joseph family tree, and four etchings made based on the Baby Hays tombstone; Jessy Solomons tombstone; a portrait of Rachel Solomons Joseph (1780-1855); the minutes of a meeting of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation, 1778.

Helfield, Tilya, 1933-2017 : Born in Ottawa, Tilya Helfield, graduated from McGill University with a B.A. in 1954 and her M.A. in English in 1955. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University in 1982.

A versatile artist, she has worked with a variety of media and art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, silkscreening, photo-etching, fibre art, paper making and textile design. A great deal of her work has been done at the Saidye Bronfman Centre, Montreal since 1960. She is represented in many public and private collections in Canada, Israel, the United States and England and has had several solo and group exhibitions.

She has written extensively for The Sunday Express and The Suburban, two Monteal newspapers. She has also contributed several articles to Viewpoints, a Canadian Jewish quarterly.

Tilya Helfield passed away in 2017.
