French (Ontario, family) : In the spring of 1842, George French (1796-1867), his wife Mary and 8 children left Liverpool for Canada. Mary French died during the voyage. Charles Croswell, his wife Rebecca Hobbs (1810-1890) and their 8 children were on the same ship. Rebecca (Hobbs) Croswell whose baby had also died at sea nursed George French's infant child after the death of his wife. Charles Croswell died of cholera 3 days before reaching land. The widower French and the widow Croswell made their way to the town of Dundas, Ontario and were eventually married in 1843. They had 8 more children for a total of 24.
