Biography/Administrative history:

Hodgins, John George, 1821-1912 : John George Hodgins (1821-1912) emigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1833. Educated at Upper Canada Academy, Victoria College and the University of Toronto, he became deputy superintendent of education under Rev. Egerton Ryerson in 1855 and was deputy minister of education for Ontario from 1876-1889. As librarian and historiographer of the department from 1890 to his death, he edited the 28 volume Documentary History of Education in Upper Canada, among other works. As a member of the Toronto social elite Hodgins held a number of positions he held in service organizations, including Secretary of the Upper Canada Bible Society, 1860-1886.
