The fonds consists of records created by the executive officers of the Canadian Crafts Council (C.C.C.)/Conseil canadien des mètiers d'art arranged in ten series as follows: subject files; acts and legislation records; executive records and committees; conferences and meetings; other organizations and associations; correspondence; membership files; administration files; projects files; and publications. The membership files series contains membership invoices from one of its predecessor organizations, the Canadian Craftsmen's Association. The projects files include completed questionnaires from a survey of craftspeople carried out in 1977, as well as the National Resource Catalogue 1979, and articles on an exhbition entitled In Praise of Hands 1974.

The fonds also consists of a sound recording of English language interviews with artisans Alice Lighthall and Evelyn Charles by Paul Bennett, Executive Director of the Ontario Crafts Council and French language interviews with artisans Lucien Desmarais and Lèo Gervais by Carole Laflamme, 1976.

The fonds includes over 400 photographs (black & white and colour), colour slides, contact sheets and negatives.

Canadian Crafts Council : The Canadian Crafts Council / Conseil canadien des métiers d'art (C.C.C.) was a national umbrella organization founded in 1974 following the demise of the Canadian Guild of Crafts and the Canadian Craftsmen's Association. The Council provided structure and a forum to unify and represent Canadian craftspeople nationally and internationally. Originally it was intended as an organization of provincial crafts councils, but over the years membership privileges were extended to other crafts organizations, to honorary members, and in 1996 to individual craftspeople. The C.C.C. encouraged crafts in Canada through disseminating information, lobbying governments, arranging exhibitions, conducting surveys, and assisting craftsmen in the execution, promotion and marketing of their craft.

The C.C.C. was headed by a Board of Directors on which sat representatives of the various provincial associations. Its standing committees included the following: executive, international, finance and membership, curatorial, education, communications, and special projects. Approximately half of its financial support came from the federal government through the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the balance through membership fees, contract revenues and donations from private foundations.

In 1996, the Council ceased operations when both federal funding and the support of the M. Joan Chalmers Cultural Centre Foundation were discontinued and its Ottawa office was closed. A transition board of volunteers kept the Council alive as a legal entity until May 1998 when a meeting was held in Montreal to decide its future. The C.C.C. members, representatives of provincial crafts councils, officers of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and the Canada Council in attendance decided that the Council be transformed into a Canadian Crafts Federation / Federation canadienne des metiers d'art (CF/FCMA) and that its membership come from the ten provincial crafts councils.

General note:

Received between 1977 and 1991 from the Canadian Crafts Council through the office of its Executive Director, Peter Weinrich, in Ottawa.

Custodial history:

Two organizations, the Canadian Craftsmen's Association and the Canadian Guild of Crafts, amalgamated in 1974 to form the Canadian Crafts Council (C.C.C.).

Arrangement note:

The records of the Canadian Crafts Council (C.C.C.) are arranged in parallel groupings of files within ten series which generally maintain the original order in which the records were received in eight separate accessions between 1977 and 1991. The files are arranged chronologically, numerically, and/or alphabetically.

Restricted materials have been placed in vols. 98-100, while oversize items have been placed in vols. 101-104. Researchers are encouraged to do keyword searches in the electronic finding aid (MSS1632) in order to facilitate their research.

Photographic material is organized by original file title in separate volume - volume 105.
