Fonds consists of the papers of Roger Stanier, relating to numerous aspects of microbiology, most of which were generated while he was at the University of California at Berkeley, 1947-1971 and the Institut Pasteur, Paris, 1971-1982. His research included photosynthesis in bacteria, their oxidation and enzyme processes and the classification of micro-organisms. There is extensive correspondence with fellow microbiologists throughout the world, 1938-1981. Offprints of articles, awards, subject files and thesis prepared by his students are also included.

The fonds also includes portraits of Stanier, both individually and with groups, primarily in Europe, 1951-[ca. 1973].

Stanier, Roger Yate, 1916-1982 : Roger Stanier was born in Victoria, B.C., in October 1916. His father was a pioneer in diagnostic radiology. In 1934 Stanier started the study of bacteriology at the University of British Columbia. After graduation he went to study in Germany but was repulsed by developments there. In 1938 he went to the University of California at Berkeley to study bacteriology and came under the influence of C.B. van Niel, a general microbiologist at the Hopkins Marine Station. Graduating with an M.Sc. and later with a Ph.D., Stanier returned to Canada in 1942 to work on the production of penicillin. After the war, Stanier spent time at Cambridge and at Indiana University. In 1947 he started his teaching and research career at Berkeley where he stayed until 1971. His diverse research included oxidative degradation of aromatic compounds, photosynthesis in bacteria, and the role of carotenoids. In 1956, together with Mike Doudoroff and Ed Adelberg, he published The Microbial World which

integrated information about the structure, biochemistry and genetics of microbes. This popular text went through four editions. Stanier also nurtured numerous graduate students who subsequently became leading lights in microbiology.

Disillusioned by the American political climate of the late 1960s, Stanier and his wife, Germaine Cohen-Bazaire Stanier, also a scientist, accepted a research position at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. Here he continued his work on cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) including their classification, biochemistry and physiology. Stanier also continued his interests in adaptation, the classification of bacteria and other subjects. He won numerous awards for his work including the Leeuwenhoek Gold Medal (the Netherlands), the Légion d'Honneur (France), a Fellowship of the Royal Society (Britain) and a Foreign Associate Member of the National Academy of Sciences (United States). Stanier died in Paris in January 1982. In spite of spending his whole research career outside of Canada, Stanier always retained his Canadian citizenship.
