Howard, Patrick Matthew, 1910-1972 : Patrick Matthew (Pat) Howard, aviator, was prominent on the Canadian aviation scene in the 1930s and 1940s. He was born in 1910 in Hastings, Ontario. In 1928, he began a four-year apprenticeship as a pilot-mechanic with the Ontario Provincial Air Service. He later completed his flying training to Commercial licence standard with National Air Transport at Toronto. In 1934, he joined General Airways at Rouyn, Quebec. He was recruited by J.H. (Red) Lymburner to join the Lincoln Ellsworth Antartic Expedition of 1935-36. Pat Howard returned to Canada in 1936 and after a brief spell as pilot for the flying German missionary Father Joseph Schulte, he joined Winnipeg-based Wings Ltd., flying in northwestern Ontario.

In 1937 he joined Trans-Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) as one of its first pilots, and flew a number of route-proving flights. He was later responsible for instrument and radar training for the airline. He left TCA in 1940 to serve as chief test pilot for Canadian Association Aircraft Ltd., flight testing and ferrying medium bombers. In 1942 he became chief test pilot for Boeing Canada at Vancouver, B.C. In 1945 he transferred to Boeing's headquarters at Seattle, Washington. He was Civilian Personnel Manager of the Boeing-designed Bomarc missile sites at North Bay, Ontario, and La Macaza, Québec, in 1961. An executive member of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, Pat Howard died in 1972.
