The two series, Department of Munition and Supply: Engineering, 1930, 1939-1947; National Research Council: Atomic Energy, 1942-1947, include publications, correspondence (including memoranda), and reports.
Fonds also includes photographs, 1940-1947, which include an album of prints depicting men and women who worked with the Department of Munitions and Supply during World War II; and slides depicting Clinton Engineer Works, Oak Ridge, Tennessee; personalities associated with the U.S. Government's atomic bomb project; Hanford Engineer Works, Hanford, Washington; Los Alamos, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bomb was dropped.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Thomson, Lesslie Rielle, 1886-1958 : Lesslie Rielle Thomson, engineer, public servant, was born in Toronto on 12 January 1886. He was educated at Upper Canada College in Toronto and the University of Toronto where he graduated in Civil Engineering in 1907.
Thomson worked as an engineer, in Toronto and Montreal (1908-1918) preparing designs for buildings, power houses, bridges, viaducts and abutments. Special work involved combinations of hydraulic, mechanical and structural engineering, including designs for the dry docks at Levis, Que., and the Stoney sluice gates at LaSalle St., Montreal. From 1918 to 1924, Thomson was Secretary-Manager on the Lignite Utilization Board of Montreal; while from 1924 to 1939 he worked independently as a Consulting Engineer in Montreal.
In 1939 Lesslie Thomson joined C.D. Howe, Minister of Transport, as Associate Executive Assistant on War Supply Board Affairs. In April 1940, when the Department of Munitions and Supply was formed, Thomson was appointed its Comptroller and Secretary and in October 1940, was made Associate Economics Adviser. Thomson organized the entry to Canada of some 235 Polish engineers and 300 Polish technicians to aid the Canadian war effort.
In October 1942, at the request of Dr. C.J. Mackenzie, Thomson was seconded to special work on atomic energy. During his career, Lesslie Thomson published numerous reports, articles and He was presented the Gzowski gold medal by the Engineer Institute of Canada in 1926 for his paper "Fuel Problem in Canada", the first public attempt to present basic economic aspects of the Canadian fuel problem. Lesslie Thomson died in 1958.
