Fonds consists of textual records, n.d., 1891-1983, in the following series: Student notes, Teaching material and research notes, Correspondence, Legal opinions and judgments, Supreme Court of Canada administration files, Speeches, Industrial Standards Act Inquiry and Canadian Judicial Council records.

Fonds also contains photographs depicting events during the legal career of Bora Laskin, particularly during his term of office as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. The following subjects are documented: Bora Laskin and other recipients of honourary degrees at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 1966; Bora Laskin and other members of the Appellate Judges Seminar held at the New York University School of Law, 1970; portrait of Bora Laskin, 1974; group photographs of the Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada in the Conference Room and the Court Room of the Supreme Court, Ottawa, 1978; group photographs of Rt. Hon. Jules Leger, Governor General, and Madame Leger with Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada and their wives on the steps of the Supreme Court, Ottawa, 1978; Bora Laskin signing an autograph for Amy Wright at the Wright Memorial Lecture, University of Toronto, 1982; views of the architectural model showing proposed alterations to the Supreme Court Library, Ottawa, 1982; Bora Laskin and Peggy Clare during the meetings of the American College of Trial Lawyers, 1983. The photographs are by unknown photographers and by the following: Mrs. Shomul Katz; Malak, Ottawa; Newton, Ottawa; New York University; Toronto Star, Toronto; E.R. Yerbury & Sons, Edinburgh.

Fonds also contains floor plans showing the proposed renovations to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1974.

Laskin, Bora

Biography/Administrative history:

Laskin, Bora : Born on 5 October 1912 in Fort William, Ontario, Bora Laskin, professor of law, Chief Justice of Canada, judge, studied law at the University of Toronto, Osgoode Hall Law School and Harvard University Law School. He taught at the University of Toronto (1940-1945, 1949-1965) and the Osgoode Hall Law School (1945-1949). During his years as a professor of law, Laskin earned a national reputation in the field of labour law, constitutional law and civil rights legislation. Laskin was President of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (1964-1965). He also served as an arbitrator on a number of Boards of inquiry and arbitration over labour disputes from the 1940's to the mid-1960's.

During these years, Laskin authored Canadian Constitutional Law: Cases and Text on Disbribution of Legislative Power (1st edition - 1951) and numerous articles for legal journals. In 1965, Laskin was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal. From 1965-1969, he served as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Prime Minister Trudeau appointed Laskin to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1970. Laskin became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1973, a position he held until his death in 1984. Bora Laskin received many honourary degrees and awards from Canadian and foreign universities and associations during his legal career.
