Fonds consists of selected correspondence from William Lyon Mackenzie, Louis-Joseph Papineau, Edouard-Raymond Fabre and François-Xavier Garneau, amongst other Canadian political figures and historians, to O'Callaghan. These represent a very small sampling of the correspondence held by the Library of Congress, and are taken from the earlier years (1840s and 1850s).

O'Callaghan, Edmund Bailey, 1797-1880 : Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan, physician, journalist, historian, and a native of Ireland, began his medical studies at Paris and completed them at Montreal. He took, up journalism, contributing to the Montreal Vindicator until its offices were destroyed during the disturbances of 1837. A close colleague of Louis-Joseph Papineau, he fled with the latter to New York. There he took up historical research. He produced a history of the Netherlands and collaborated with Brodhead in the production of Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New York. He turned from the practice of medicine completely and applied his talents to the post of State Archivist of New York.
