Collection consists of documents relating to Canada selected from the papers of the fifth Duke of Newcastle, particularly during his tenures as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, 1852-1854, and as Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1859-1864. Microfilmed material is located on the following microfilm reels: A-307 to A-309, A-1610, and A-1927 to A-1928.

Collection also consists of microfilmed material which includes copies of letterbooks, 1859-1864 and correspondence, 1849-1864, of Newcastle, reels A-307 to A-309; Colonial Office letterbook (B) of the Duke of Newcastle containing letters to colonial governors, 21 June 1859 to 5 December 1860, with index and a journal kept by the Duke of Newcastle during the visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada, 1860, reel A-1610; and selected documents from the Glynne-Gladstone MSS relating to the affairs of Canada and other colonies of British North America, 1846, 1855-1864, including the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1860, appointment defence, extradition and railways, reels A-1927 and A-1928.

Newcastle, Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham Clinton, Duke of, 1811-1864 : Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle sat in Parliament from 1832 to 1864. He held such offices as Lord of the Treasury, 1834-1835, Secretary for War and the Colonies, 1852-1854, Secretary of War, 1854-1855, and Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1859-1864. In 1860, Newcastle accompanied the Prince of Wales on his travels in British North America and the United States.
