This collection contains part of H.W. Bayfield's correspondence on British North American hydrographic surveys, 1828-1861. While engaged in surveying Bayfield kept in almost constant touch with the Hydrographic Department of the Admiralty, and principally with the Hydrographer, Captain (later Admiral) Francis Beaufort. The collection includes Bayfield's private and official letters to the Hydrographic Department, with technical tables, accounts, sketches of charts, and occasional descriptive commentaries on settlements and geography. Includes "St. Lawrence Survey", 1828-1849, microfilm reels A-423 and A-424; miscellaneous papers, 1852-1861, photocopies, 46 pages.

General note:

The microfilm was made ca. 1958 from originals now held in the Hydrographic Department, Ministry of Defence, Taunton, Somerset, England. The photocopies were received in 1980 from Mrs. Ruth McKenzie.
Similar correspondence on the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence and Atlantic surveys will be found in MG 24 F 28 and scattered throughout MG 12. Bayfield's private journals for 1829-1836, 1841-1848 and 1851-1853 are in MG 24 F 28. Completed maps and charts arising from the surveys are located in the Cartographic and Architectural Archives Division.
