Fonds consists of a letter, dated 1 June, 1776, from Captain Charles Douglas to Henry Harvey praising the latter for his speed and efficiency in pursuing American rebel forces up the St. Lawrence river and instructing him, in compliance with General Carleton's request, to proceed farther upstream, to Lac St. Pierre and beyond, if necessary. Douglas also advises Harvey that a British flotilla containing reinforcements in men and arms will soon be sent upriver to join him. A reply from Harvey to Douglas, dated 4 June, 1776, comments briefly on movements of American troops. The material consists of 4 pages of photocopies.

Harvey, Sir Henry, 1737-1810 : Sir Henry Harvey entered the British Navy in 1751 and for the better part of his naval career served on ships in and around North America and the West Indies. In January 1776 he was appointed to the Martin (H.M.S.), in which he served under Captain Sir Charles Douglas at the relief of Quebec. His resourcefulness in pursuing retreating American troops up the St. Lawrence River earned him the praise of Douglas. In the latter years of his career he participated in a number of the major naval battles of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He attained the rank of Admiral on April 23, 1804, and died at home in England six years later.
