The class Audit Office 13 was organized in 140 bundles or volumes, all but one of which contain the surviving records of the second series of documentation accumulated by the Commissioners appointed to hear, inquire into and decide upon claims for losses and sufferings by Loyalists, or for furnishing supplies for the British Army and Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War. At least five bundles are known to have been lost before the records reached the Public Record Office, and bundle 101 was unlocatable at the time of filming. These bundles contain the original memorials and schedules of losses, as well as supporting material - wills, deeds, land survey plans, drawings of buildings, indentures, certificates, accounts, pamphlets, newspaper cuttings, letters, powers of attorney, and other relevant documents - much of which was recorded in the entrybooks in Audit Office 12. Many of the related records of decisions taken and reports made are also located in AO 12. Note that many documents date substantially before the war, while others bear dates illustrating the lengthy claims process

The final bundle (volume 140), entitled "Miscellaneous Claims, 1821-1835" actually contains American claims for losses at Martinique, 1799-1803, and claims from Upper Canada for losses during the War of 1812, but dated 1824-1835.

All extant volumes (1-100, 102-140) have been microfilmed and are available on reels B-2176 to B-2216, B-2284 to B-2297; B-2331 to B-2346; B-2416 to B-2455; and B-2551 to B-2580.

Selections from certain volumes (47, 70B, 76 and 81) had previously been copied as transcriptions or photostats. These photostats and transcriptions are available on microfilm reel C-12905.

Textual records (Electronic) Finding Aid 90, British Records on Microfilm, provides a microfilm shelf list which provides reel number, identifying the microfilm reel number, the title and outside dates for each volume, indicating folio numbers only where a volume is split between two reels. Textual records (Electronic) Finding Aid 250 part 1 provides an historical introduction to the Audit Office records in general and the inter-relationships amongst series; the PRO shelf list and a shelf list correlating microfilm references for both the transcripts and the film of the originals; plus notes on the utility of various published guides to Audit Office records. Finding Aid 250 part 3 reproduces the B. F. Stevens nominal index of claimants for Audit Office 13 - which index is also available on reel B-1154. (Part 2 contains the Stevens index for AO 12.) Note that this index identifies only the bundle (volume) number for each claim. Textual records (Paper) Several recent published works serve as finding aids to records of the Loyalist Claims Commissioners in Audit Office 13 and to other related series. Peter Wilson Coldham's work "American Migrations, 1765-1799" (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2000) presents an analytical symmary for each of the claims and evidence in both AO 12 and AO 13, organized first by the colony in which the losses occurred, then alphabetically, with precise bundle/volume and page references. Introductory notes provide contextual information, while appendices identify related records in Treasury 50, 77 and 79, and a nominal index of claimants provides access to the summaries. . Arrangement note:

The commissioners organized their records in several broad classifications: evidence and other material relating to supplies furnished to the Army and Navy; memorials and evidence relating to claims, with some subdivision of "new" and "late" claims; Temporary Assistance or Support to Loyalists; and administrative correspondence, etc. Within these groupings, the documents were arranged first geographically by the colony in which the losses occurred or of residence, then alphabetically by initial of the surname. (The specific references in Coldham's book facilitate locating documents within a volume.) The various indexes identify the names of claimants but not of witnesses or other parties to the supporting documentation. Duplicated or closely related documents are sometimes found in claims by persons of differing names yet related concerns.

Other records relating to Loyalist claims have been microfilmed from the originals in Audit Office 12 (the companion series to AO 13), Treasury 50 and 79, while a small collection of transcripts was designated MG 55/14, volume 1.
