Fonds consists of a combined Board of Directors and Shareholders minute book, (1868-1877), and a cash book for The Canada Peat Fuel Co., (1867-1877); 2 letterbooks (1876-1892) containing Pyke's private and business correspondence when he was secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Locomotive and Engine Works, Kingston, Ontario, and manager Geo. Reeves & Co., Montreal; and 1 volume on steel making.

Pyke, James William, 1853-1939 : James William Pyke was born on 12 November 1853, the second child of Reverend James William Pyke and Elizabeth McTavish of Hudson, Canada East. The younger Pyke was the eldest male in a family of 15 children. He married Naomi Franklin Matthews in November 1873. By 1875 he was bookkeeper for the Canada Peat Fuel Co. and November of that year he was appointed secretary of the company. In 1876 Pyke became secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Locomotive and Engineering Company, Kingston, Ontario. In 1884 he became manager of Geo. Reeves & Co., steel importers. After Reeves died in 1892 Pyke took over the business as James W. Pyke & Co. Ltd. He was elected president of the Montreal Metal and Hardware Manufactures' and Merchants' Association in 1901. He was also president of Keewatin Milling Co., and Maritime Fish Corporation Ltd. Pyke was also vice-president and director of several paper, cotton, and insurance companies.
