Fonds contains 108 photographs, 1910-1977, relating to the life and career of Canadian artist and teacher Anne Douglas Savage.

The fonds also includes 7 caricatures of the Canadian artist A.Y. Jackson by Arthur Lismer, relating to the production of a film on Jackson being made by the National Film Board of Canada in 1940 or 1941.

Savage, Anne, 1896-1971 : Anne Savage, artist, was born into a well-established Montreal family and studied at the Art Association of Montreal from 1914 to 1918 under Maurice Cullen and William Brymner. She was a founding member in 1921 of the Beaver Hall Hill Group, with Randolph Hewton, Edwin Holgate, Lilias Torrance Newton, Sarah Robertson, Prudence Heward and others. Through this group she was introduced to the members of the Group of Seven in Toronto and she became life-long friends with A.Y. Jackson. Savage's own painting was strongly infuenced by the Group of Seven.

While Savage painted all her life, maintaining a studio at her family cottage on Lake Wonish, Quebec, and joining the Canadian Group of Painters, she became best known as a teacher. In 1922 she began a twenty-six year career teaching art at Baron Byng High School and later, influenced by Arthur Lismer's work teaching child art, began classes at the Art Association of Montreal in 1937. She was appointed Supervisor of Art for Montreal schools under the Protestant School Board in 1948, and also taught at Banff and the Faculty of Education, McGill University.

A.Y. JACKSON A.Y. Jackson was born in Montreal in 1882 and studied under Edmond Dyonnet and William Brymner before attending the Julian Academy in Paris 1907-1908. Following a career in commercial art in Montreal, Jackson moved to Toronto where he became a founding member of the Group of Seven. He spent much of his life travelling Canada and painting its landscape, while maintaining a studio in the Studio Building, Toronto. He spent his last years in Manotick, then in Ottawa, and finally in Kleinberg, Ontario. He died in 1974.

General note:

A biography is available in the accession file for 1990-136 (DAP). The A.Y. Jackson correspondence and some of the Writings and Miscellaneous material series was received in 1990 from Anne Savage's niece Anne McDougall and her husband, R.L. McDougall, of Ottawa, Ontario. The rest of the material was received in 1995 from Anne McDougall.
