Fonds consists of the papers of Alexander Ross documenting his career as a Public Servant between 1929 and 1956. The papers consist principally of personal, semi-official and official correspondence accumulated by Ross during his career as Chief Accountant with the Canadian Farm Loans Board (1929-1942), Deputy Minister for the Army (1944-1946) and Associate Deputy Minister of the Military (1947-1956).

The fonds also contains photographs depicting the activities of Alexander Ross, including service as a member of the Canadian Army Pay Corps during the First World War, as well as personal activities of Ross, his family and friends, and his travels, 1918-1969.

Ross, Alexander, 1889-1978 : Alexander Ross, born in 1889 in Perth, Scotland, emigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg in 1913. At the outbreak of World War I, he enlisted in the famous 8th Canadian Infantry Battalion and was severely wounded in France in 1915. He was evacuated to Britain and transferred to the Canadian Army Pay Corps in London. Following W.W. I, Ross was appointed to negotiate some financial settlements regarding military expenditures with the British Government. Upon his return to Canada, Ross joined the Government Service. Between 1929 and 1942 he served as the Chief Accountant for the Canadian Farm Loans Board.

In 1942 Ross was employed as Financial Superintendent at the Canadian Military Headquarters in London, supervising Canadian Army expenditures and negotiating financial arrangements with the U.K. government departments. In 1944, Ross was appointed Deputy Minister of National Defence for the Army. Following W.W. II, he was assigned to duty in the U.K. and the Netherlands to prepare financial statements for the Netherlands government in areas where Canadian Armed Forces had served. In 1946, he was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George for services rendered during W.W. II. In 1947, Ross was appointed Associate Deputy Minister of the Military and served in that capacity until 1956.
