He was born in 1902 in the Poltava region of Ukraine, then part of the Imperial Russian empire. In 1925 he graduated from the Kiev Polytechnical Institute where he studied until 1930. From 1930 to 1934 he worked at the USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad. Dr. Klochko was Professor and Laboratory Head at the Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry in Moscow where he worked from 1932 until he came to Canada. He was the author of a large number of scientific papers including one on platinum enrichment for which he was awarded a Stalin Prize in 1948. He visited France, Austria and India on scientific missions and meetings. He worked as a scientific consultant on two tours of China. He was also the recipient of the order of the Red Banner of Labour and the Medal of Chinese Friendship.
In Canada he worked as a scientific consultant and published numerous articles in Canada and the United States and wrote the book, A Soviet Scientist in China (1964). He became a Canadian citizen in 1966.Additional information:General note:The Klochko material was removed from the subject's apartment after his death by an employee of the National Library. Klochko's papers arrived at the National Archives of Canada in nine boxes and the files they contained were in no apparent order. Klochko was a scientist who defected to Canada from the USSR in 1961 and most of his manuscripts date from the years after his arrival in Canada when he worked as a scientific consultant. The medals and photographs were received from the estate of Dr. Klochko, whose executors acted on his behalf.Subject heading:- Michael Klochko - Diaries, 1961-1982 Soviet Union, [1943-1985]
