Fonds consists of papers gathered by Sir William Johnston Ritchie's family in the early years of the twentieth century documenting the history of the Ritchie family. The fonds includes material relating to Ritchie's appointments as Queen's counsel, as judge of the Supreme Court of Canada and as chief justice of Canada; documents produced by Sir William Buell Richards, the first chief justice of the Supreme Court; and documents on early Supreme Court of Canada procedures. There are also papers regarding Ritchie's grant of a knighthood and commissions of deputy to the governor-general.

Ritchie, W. J. (William Johnstone), Sir, 1813-1892 : Sir William Johnstone Ritchie was born in Annapolis, Nova Scotia, October 28 1813. He was educated at Pictou Academy, and was called to the bar of New Brunswick in June 1838. He was appointed as Queen's counsel in February 1854. From 1847 to 1851, he represented the city and county of Saint John in the House of Assembly of New Brunswick. In 1855, he was made a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of New Brunswick, and in 1865 he became chief justice of the province. On October 8 1875, he was appointed a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, and in January 1879 he was made chief justice of Canada. From July 6 1881 to January 1882 and again from September 6 to December 1882, he acted as deputy governor of Canada during the absence of Lord Lorne in England. On March 5 1884, he was appointed deputy to the governor-general, Lord Lansdowne. He died in Ottawa September 25 1892. Mr. William Johnston Ritchie was created a knight bachelor in 1881. He published 'The Chesapeake'; 'Before Mr. Justice Ritchie, with his decision thereon', Saint John, N.B., 1864; and 'Observations of the chief justice of New Brunswick on a bill entitled - An Act to establish a Supreme Court for the dominion of Canada presented to parliament on may 21, 1869, by the Honourable Sir John A. Macdonald'-, Saint John, N.B., 1870.
