Fonds consists of letters written by Sir Herbert and Lady Marler, Canadian Legation, Tokyo, Japan, to their daughter, Adelaide North in New York, New York, 1929-1936, 20 cm (volume 1).

The fonds also contains postal covers sent with the letters, including various covers with shipboard postal markings and cancellations.

In addition, there are photographs depicting Sir Herbert's Marler's activities as first Canadian ambassador to Japan, 1929-1936, including views of Japan, the Canadian Legation, members of staff, ceremonies and presentations.

Biography/Administrative history:

Marler, Herbert Meredith, Sir, 1876-1940 : Sir Herbert Marler, diplomat, was born and educated in Montreal. He attended Montreal High School, Montreal Collegiate Institute and McGill University. He was a notary with M. and H.M. Marler in Montreal and served as a Major with the 245 Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I. He was a member of the House of Commons 1921-1925 for St. Lawrence-St-Georges, Quebec. He was appointed as the first Canadian Minister to Japan, on 11 January 1929, where he served until 1936 when he created K.C.M.G; he then became Minister to the United States. He resigned in 1939 and died four months later.
