Fonds consists of textual material including personal correspondence and literary manuscripts of Sinclair Ross, 1933-1989.

Ross, James Sinclair, b. 1908 : Sinclair Ross was born near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Raised by his mother, he grew up on prairie farms. In 1924 he began a career with the Royal Bank in Abbey, Saskatchewan. In 1933 he transferred to the Royal Bank in Winnipeg. His first short story was published in a British magazine in 1934 and between the mid-1930's and early 1950's he published regularly in Queen's Quarterly. His short stories were later collected and published as The Lamp At Noon and other stories (1968).

Ross published his first novel, As For Me and My House, which later became a modern Canadian classic, in New York in 1941. He served with the Canadian army in England during WW II and after the war resumed his career with the Royal Bank in Montreal. His second novel, The Well, was published in 1958 and he began his third novel while still in Montreal. It was published as Whir of Gold in 1970, after he had retired from the bank and moved to Greece. In 1971 he moved to Malaga, Spain, where he stayed until returning to Canada in 1980, settling first in Montreal and then in Vancouver. His fourth novel Sawbones Memorial was published in 1974 and in 1988 a memoir, "Just Wind and Horses", was included in The Macmillan Anthology edited by John Metcalf and Leon Rooke.
