Fonds consists of papers mostly related to the procuring of labour equipment and supplies for various construction projects in and around Ottawa. Series consists of journals; ledgers; time book; bank books; sales books; consulting architect files; estimates and tenders; wages; taxes; invoices, receipts and other papers; and miscellaneous papers.

Fonds also contains photographs depicting Ottawa Gas Works under construction, Ottawa, Ont.

John Sutherland & Son (Firm) : John Sutherland entered the field of general contracting in Ottawa in the early 1890's. He was later associated with the firm of Campbell & Sutherland and then with Holbrook & Sutherland. He began to operate independently shortly after 1900. His son, John Jr. became a partner in the firm, and eventually took over the business and maintained it until the 1950's. The company built many projects, including the Ottawa Gas Works and various Ottawa Transit System Buildings.
