Microfilmed material includes court committee minute books, 1836-1918; minute books of the bank, 1837-1918, and is located on microfilm reels M-161 to M-174.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Bank of British North America : The Bank of British North America was formed in London in 1836 by a group of British businessmen who wished to participate in the developing prosperity of the British North American colonies. Between 1836 and 1840 branches were opened in a number of cities in Lower and Upper Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland; and in 1862 in British Columbia. The Head Office was in London and the Head Office for Canada in Montreal. The bank applied for a Royal charter in 1840, and in 1871 by a special provision of the Bank Act a new charter was obtained.
At the time of W.W.I difficulties were experienced in administering the bank from headquarters in Great Britain, and in 1918 a merger was arranged with the Bank of Montreal.Additional information:General note:The correspondence of the New York Agency was received in 1957 from the Bank of Montreal.
