434 postal covers.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of the papers of the Ermatinger Estate, including the papers of the Samuel Jacobs Estate and others accumulated by the executors. The records, divided into four series according to their nature and origin, are as follows: the papers of Lawrence Ermatinger, including papers of Forrest Oakes, 1765-1780; business and personal papers of Edward Ermatinger, 1818-1874; the Jacobs-Ermatinger estate papers, relating primarily to the economic history of Lower Canada, 1758-1862; and miscellaneous papers, including genealogical notes, family correspondence and newspaper clippings, 1766-1966.
The fonds also consists of 434 postal covers covering the period from 1763 to 1853 with emphasis on 1772 to 1820s.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Ermatinger (family) : Lawrence Ermatinger (d. 1789), a Swiss merchant, settled at Montreal in approximately 1760, where he engaged in the fur trade with his brother-in-law, Forrest Oakes (d. 1783). His son, Frederick William Ermatinger (1769-1827), was Sheriff of Montreal from 1811 onward, and a founder of the Bank of Montreal in 1817. Frederick William Ermatinger succeeded his uncle, Edward William Gray (1742-1810), as Sheriff and as executor of the estate of Samuel Jacobs. Upon the death of Frederick William, his brother Charles Oakes Ermatinger (1776-1833), and Samuel Gale became executors of the estate.
Charles Oakes Ermatinger became a partner in the North West Company in 1805. His son, Charles Oakes Ermatinger, Jr. (1802-1857) settled at St. Thomas, U.C. Edward Ermatinger (1797-1876) was a grandson of Lawrence Ermatinger. He served with the Hudson's Bay Company from 1818 to 1830, then settled at St. Thomas.
