The class FO 371 is a composite class made up of papers of the various political departments of the Foreign Office. The National Archives of Canada has microfilmed selected volumes of original correspondence, typed copies and confidential prints relating to conflicts between the United States and the Dominion of Newfoundland concerning seizures and incursions on the fishing grounds off Newfoundland. The correspondence is from a wide variety of British, American and Newfoundland officials. Only volumes pertaining directly to the Newfoundland fisheries were microfilmed. These records are located on microfilm reels B-2539 to B-2550.

For the period 1906 to 1920, FO 371 is arranged in annual series which are further subdivided by country in alphabetical order. After 1920, the political correspondence is arranged in annual series further subdivided by department and then by country and subjects. As with the general correspondence classes before 1906, extensive correspondence relating to particular topics was often kept separate and bound in "case" volumes.
