FO 97 is a class supplementary to Foreign Office general correspondence before 1906. It consists of volumes of papers pertaining to a given subject which were kept open and retained in their department longer than the contemporary correspondence of that year.

The National Archives of Canada has microfilmed all but three volumes of the supplement to the general correspondence of the United States of America and one volume supplementary to the general correspondence of France. Subjects covered include: correspondence of Thomas Jefferson and the French Minister; intercepted papers of Citizen Genet; Commissioners' Report on the North American Provinces, 1825; the North-East Boundary Commission, 1839-1842; the Sir Robert Peel incident; various papers relating to North American fisheries and the Halifax Commission; various papers relating to British and American claims arising from several treaties; etc. The volumes supplementary to the general correspondence of France relate to the Newfoundland fisheries, 1891.

These records are available on microfilm reels B-1678 to B-1698 and B-2281 to B-2283.

General note:

When a file in FO 97 was closed, it was originally placed after the Foreign Office volume it would normally follow and given that volume's number identified with an asterisk (e.g., FO 5/1*). Later, these starred volumes were removed to FO 97 and given their present volume numbers.
