The class FO 90 consists of correspondence in two main categories: accessions, births, marriages, or deaths of royal families and heads of state, and, royal letters of accreditation or recall, commissions, and related papers of British diplomatic representatives. The class as a whole is a continuation of the series of Royal letters found in SP 104, State Papers Foreign, Entry-books; the dividing date between the two classes being approximately 1710. From that date, Royal letters will be found in FO 90 and in a few instances from 1793 to 1834, in FO 95, Miscellanea Series I.

The National Archives of Canada has copied selected papers from volume 158, France and Lorraine including the warrant for affixing the Great Seal to the commission appointing William Shirley and William Mildmay commissioners to deal with questions concerning prisoners and prizes taken at sea and matters relating to North America arising from the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, the commission itself, a warrant for its revocation, the revocation, and entries indicating that Ruvigny de Cosné received a similar Commission and succeeded Shirley. The transcripts (7 pages) are available on microfilm reel C-12906.
