Brisbane, Thomas, Sir, 1773-1860 : Military officer colonial governor astronomer

Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane was gazetted and ensign in 1789 and had so thoroughly established his military reputation by 1813 that the Duke of Wellington recommended him for a command in America. As Major-General, Brisbane went to Canada and fought in the battle of Plattsburg. In 1821 he was appointed governor of New South Wales. In 1826 he retired and returned to Scotland where he occupied himself with his observatory and astronomical investigations.
