Fonds consists of records related to Lord Durham's career as a British Statesman. It contains numerous series including documents on: Westminster Reform Society of Great Britain, despatches from the Colonial Office, commissions, instructions and colonial administration material relating to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Upper and Lower Canada, Lady Durham, and manuscripts entitled "Durham and Bougham, 1833-1838" by Hariet Martineau and "Sketch of Lord Durham's Mission to Canada in 1838" by Charles Buller.

Microfilmed material consists of correspondence of Lord Durham, 1836 to 1839, regarding, for the most part, the political situation in the Canadas and his handling of that situation. Also included is Lady Durham's journal which records Durham's last six months, 1840, and her correspondence with Mary Grey, 1838-1840. This material is located on microfilm reels A-1219 and A-1220.

Durham, John George Lambton, Earl of, 1792-1840 : John George Lambton, first Earl of Durham was educated at Eton. He served as a Lieutenant in the 10th Dragoons, 1810-1811. He entered the House of Commons in 1813, and sat as a Whig until 1828, when he was created Baron Durham of the City of Durham and of Lambton Castle. Durham was sworn a member of the Privy Council and appointed Lord Privy Seal in 1830. He helped prepare the first Reform Bill but resigned from the Cabinet in 1833, and was created Viscount Lambton and Earl of Durham in the same year. He served as British Minister at St. Petersburg, 1835-1837.

He was appointed Governor-in-Chief for the provinces of British North America, 31 March 1838. Durham's task was to investigate questions respecting the form and future government of these colonies. He dealt with the problems of the Canadas with energy and determination. His ordinance exiling rebel leaders to Bermuda, however, was disallowed by the British Government and Durham resigned his post in October 1838 to protest this decision. On his return journey to England he supervised the compilation of his Report on the Affairs of British North America for the Colonial Office. Once back in England, Durham again entered the House of Lords and defended himself against the hostility which was shown him.

He died at Cowes, 28 July 1840.

General note:

The main body of the papers, volumes 1-45 were received in 1907 and 1922 from the 3rd Earl of Durham. Other items received at various times between 1925 and 1981.
An annotated copy of the calendar for volumes 7-34 was published in the Report of the Public Archives, 1923, appendix B, pages 15-410.

Volumes 7-50 were microfilmed in 1963, reels C-1849 to C-1860. Additional material was microfilmed in 1981, reels A-1219 and A-1220, from the original held in the Lambton family archives.
