Montreal Board of Trade : The Montreal Board of Trade, business association, is one of the oldest associations of its type in Canada. Its formation was partly rooted in the squabbles between the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada during the term of Lord Dalhousie.

One of the leaders of the Council, John Richardson, called a meeting at his home in April, 1822 to discuss ways in which commercial interests in the City of Montreal could secure legislation more favourable to them. Attending were John Gray, George Moffat, Horatio Gates, Peter McGill, George Auldjo, John Torrance, Thomas Torrance, Joseph Donegani and others. They formed a "Committee of Trade" with William Birks as President. The Committee of Trade later became the Board of Trade.

Initially, the policies included the union of the Canadas and the abolition of seigneurial customs in Montreal. Later they called for trade improvements and canal construction. By the 1840's, the board was one of the city's more important institutions, conservative in nature and a stepping stone to business success. It has remained a strong voice supporting policies which it believes will foster the commercial health of the city.
