The fonds consists of the 1932 promotional film "Day Nursery Campaign," and e-copies of photographs depicting children's daycare activities, interior and exterior views, Christmas festivities, and child care workers at the Andrew Fleck Child Centre, previously known as the Ottawa Day Nursery.

Andrew Fleck Child Centre : The Ottawa Day Nursery, as the centre was first known, was established in 1911 in connection with Settlement House, 318 Rideau Street, by Miss Flora McNeill. In 1916, the Day Nursery formally separated from Settlement House and moved to 87 Albert Street. The original objective of the nursery was to provide child care services to working mothers. From 1916, the nursery was managed by a Day Nursery Committee, later known as the Board of Management. A Matron oversaw the day to day operations with respect to childcare.

Throughout its history, the privately-operated, non-profit nursery has been funded by Board members' pledges, community canvassing, the Ottawa and District Community Chest and the United Appeal, supplemented by grants from the city of Ottawa. Parents have always been charged for the Nursery services based on their ability to pay.

In 1932, through a bequest made by Mrs. Andrew Fleck, the Board of Management purchased property on George Street and built the Andrew Fleck Memorial Building, which remains the location of the child centre. The operating name of the Ottawa Day Nursery was changed to the Andrew Fleck Child Centre in 1970, and to Andrew Fleck Child Care Services in 1991. The legal name was changed from the Ottawa Day Nursery to Andrew Fleck Child Care Services in 2003, and it is now known as Andrew Fleck Children's Services. The centre provides day care services for children from 2 1/2 up to and including kindergarten age.

Textual records and photographs received in 1983 and 1986 from Andrew Fleck Children's Services (formerly known as Andrew Fleck Child Care Services, as Andrew Fleck Child Centre prior to that, and Ottawa Day Nursery originally) in Ottawa, Ont. Nitrate film received in 2012 from the same institution.

The textual records and photographs were de-accessioned 1 October 2012 to the City of Ottawa Archives. The extent of this material was 63 cm of textual records and 113 photographs: 112 b&w and 1 col. Remaining at LAC are 2 x 35mm nitrate film reels (5 min): 1 negative and 1 print for the short promotional film "Day Nursery Campaign." This material has stayed at LAC, rather than being de-accessioned with the other material in the fonds, because LAC has a dedicated nitrate storage facility.

The de-accessioned material consisted of the history of the Ottawa Day Nursery; annual reports; Day Nursery Committee and Board of Management minutes; financial records; day nursery reports; records of the corresponding Secretary; Sewing Committee minutes; and miscellaneous records. It also included photographs depicting children's daycare activities, interior and exterior views, Christmas festivities, and child care workers at the Andrew Fleck Child Centre, previously known as the Ottawa Day Nursery.

Digital copies of a few of the photographs that were made before de-accessioning have been kept linked to this descriptive record for research convenience.
