Item is a journal kept by Thomas Manby while serving under Captain George Vancouver. The journal consists of a letter from Thomas Manby to John Lees announcing his intention to keep a journal while serving with George Vancouver, 1790, p. 1; journal of the voyage of the Discovery from England to the Pacific North West coast, February 1791-April 1792, pp. 2-68, and of the survey of that coast, visits to the California coast and the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands, the return to the North West coast and further surveys, April 1792-June 1793, 98 pages. Included in the volume are copies of an account of the death of Walter Noble, Earl of Essex, 1576, 12 pages, an account of travels in the viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico), about 1560-1575, with notes on the land, trade and related matters, 19 pages.

Manby, Thomas, fl. 1785-1835 : Thomas Manby (fl. 1785-1835), naval officer, served as a master's mate aboard the DISCOVERY under Captain George Vancouver, and as master of the CHATHAM. He was promoted commander in 1797, captain in 1799, and rear-admiral in 1830.
